Is it really just a game?

The other day during second period when we were watching how aggressive sport game fans really get, I went home and asked my boyfriend about how he feels about that subject. When I saw him the next day, I said to him, "I think football games are nothing to really stress about! Its just a GAME!." I purposely said that to him, to see what or how exactly he would react since I know he is a HUGE niners fan. He raised his voice a little and said back, "Its not just a game, its not just entertainment. Its more than that, its a way life style. All my family has been a niners fan since they were little. Its like it runs in our blood. People kill themselves to be on the NFL." This made me wonder whether sports is more of a way of living, a tradition in the family. Its the same way I feel about my favorite music artist or band. They are a big deal to many, something that they identify as.

  2. Interesting observation, Ana! Wise thinking there at your attempt to analyze how he reacted since everybody is different and each to their own with their personal and moral beliefs. Which leads me to my next sentence, I think it is important to recognize that not everybody shares or carries those same beliefs and mindsets. Each and every one of us have passions and feel more strongly about one subject than another. For your boyfriend, in his case, it is evident that he is very passionate about sports and in your case, it is obvious that you have some type of correlation to that feeling however it is more towards music. This all, I feel like, can depend on the biological structure in which have to do with our personal developments. Some of us find passion in the essence of practicing medicine or discussing politics. Others find strong connections towards literature and art. Personally, I am very passionate about weight lifting and the fitness industry, I can easily become very strongly engaged in the presence of a conversation having to do with the science behind sports medicine and nutrition, however my other friend may have no idea or interest in that topic but could provide a great argument when it comes to discussing modern day economics. Lifestyles are mostly based on what we choose to focus on and what we are passionate about.

  3. Nice post Ana!
I have seen firsthand examples of it so I get what he means, yet I still think it is interesting as a sports fan to hear that watching/following sports teams is a way of life. I follow lots of sports team and get into the games while I watch, but to me it is still just a game at the end of the day. But it also makes sense to me that some people who maybe also played the sport, get into it more than others because they share the same passion-but I don't think that it excuses the behaviors of the people in the documentary. I wish that these people didn't act this way because sports are meant to be enjoyed and a way to connect with other people, not meant as an excuse to get into fights and hospitalize others.
