ARTICLE
While reading this article the only thing I kept thinking about was how differently this situation would have been handled if middle eastern kids wrote ISIS on their shirts. Those kids would have probably been expelled from school and had the cops called on them. What makes this situation any different? Why are these girls allowed to return to a school where they deliberately insulted, offended and degraded their peers? Because only ONE said "sorry"? In all honesty that girl was only sorry that it brought such negative attention to her and her friends. Everyone knows how offensive that word is and the school should not tolerate it at all ESPECIALLY because it was done on school grounds!!

Really good blog Lauren. I like the point you bring up that they had worn shirts to spell out ISIS, they would have probably taken into custody and/or expelled. ISIS obviously is associated with bad things, and yet they get away with using that word which is equally if not more offensive, and get away with it. I don't think that those girls are genuinely sorry, because if they were they wouldn't have done it in the first place. Along with them claiming to not be racist, obviously if you use that word you recognize that there is race.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the school only suspended them for a few days instead of expulsion, if they had done something with drugs or like you said ISIS, I bet that the school would have gotten more involved.
Great blog! I think the word "sorry" can have a lot of meaning, but sometimes has no meaning. The sad thing is a lot of the time it has no meaning.
ReplyDeleteI feel like they should have definitely been at least suspended for a significant time, but not expelled. Why? Just because verbal abuse doesn't match what would be normal expulsion criteria. That would be fighting or severely injuring someone, carrying a gun or brandishing a knife, or carrying illegal drugs. Bomb threats could potentially get someone expelled. Pretty much if you do something criminal or endanger the community (or fake threats). If it was ISIS they definitely would have been investigated at least.
ReplyDeleteFuthermore, I feel like they would feel the implicit consequences of their actions from simply being looked down upon by peers, teachers, and having that on their record.
