Free Andrea Yates??

It has been years since the Andrea Yates case. She has spent at least 17 years in a mental institution after drowning her five children due to her mental illness. In the mental institution she was treated for her postpartum psychosis and had allegedly gotten 'better' under the right medication and treatment. She now is diagnosed with bipolar disorder which is being managed through medication. There is a debate going on whether Andrea Yates should be released from the mental institution or should remain there. Personally, I don't think she should be released from the mental institution due to the simple fact that she could relapse like she did before. It is too much of a risk letting her out into the real world with people again. What do you think?

  1. I agree Lauren, she shouldn't be released.
She deserves to be in an institute or in prison for the rest of her life.
If she was released, it will just show that a person can kill 5 children, go to an institute instead of prison, and be able to get away with murder. If she really is mentally ill, she should not be released into the world with children.

  2. I agree! People are trying to defend the fact that she was mentally ill and that she did not know what she was doing, but she did. She knew that drowning her kids would kill them, she may have thought she was saving them in some sense, but she still knew she was killing her children. I don't understand why people are making that argument because in that sense, then why are we convicting druggies when they break the law? Drug addicts actually have no idea what they are doing or saying half the time, and regardless of that fact, they are not given any leeway and their addiction is not an excuse in the legal system. Not only that but most drug addicts don't go to a mental institution or a rehab, instead most of them end up in jail or prison.

  4. Definitely should not be released. It is unfortunate that she had to have such bad mental issues, but people with issues such as these need to be continuously watched over and helped. I don't think good things would happen if she were left alone.

  5. It's interesting to think how society would react if Andrea Yates were released. What message would that send to people who suffer from a mental illness? What message would that send to the average person?

  6. I agree Lauren. I think it would send the wrong message to America if she was let out of the institution. Also, since she is still battling biopolar disorder I feel that a relapse could definitely be possible. In addition, we can't give special treatment to people who have overcome/mostly overcome their mental illness when they have done such a heinous crime such as killing their children. People who have killed without mental illness never get let out of prison and sometimes even face the death sentence.

  7. I agree as well. I do not think mental illness should be an excuse to drown your children. If a person was seen as mentally sane, they would have life in prison for drowning 5 children. Even if Andrea Yates is now mentally sound, she should be transferred to prison. The only reason she was placed in the institution was because she was still seen as mentally unstable and in need of treatment, now that she has received proper treatment I think she should remain detained and be transferred to a prison.

  8. I agree as well. I think she shouldn't be released due to her having a past relapse. There are plenty of people with that disorder who can handle it better then she does, I think there is more to her then just that disorder of bipolarness. No one who kills their OWN children should be released.
