Purpose of learning about history
What is the purpose of learning about the past in school? I hear people always saying its better to leave the past behind...but that's not what we are being taught at all. We are bringing up the past everyday in school, but for what reason? "So we can learn from it and not have the horrible things happen again." But what if some people get inspired by those horrible things and want to attempt it? There's so much that we are capable of that we didn't know, and learning of what people have done in the past may give some ideas. Although that may probably be a small number of people who would think that way, it could still be dangerous. I think, like most things, there are benefits and risks to having knowledge of what has made history. I think Global teaches us a valuable lesson about history. Unlike history classes I've been in, we are learning WHY people do certain things, and how things unravel from start to finish.

I agree with you. I normally don't like history, but global goes in depth about touchy subjects that people (Americans) hate to face in today's society. Like for example, Ive never studied white privileges and never had that subject taken to place in a classroom. No other class EVER goes on depth about The Holocaust, and because of global class I feel like Its the first time I ever understood the event and how it took place. Not all bad history is bad, but it should be remember to acknowledge those who sacrifices to make today history. Like for example the Civil right movement and MLKJ. :)
ReplyDeleteYou bring up a very good point Kassie. I think the reason why History is often times disregarded by people is because we would rather define ourselves by where we are going in the future rather than where we come from.
ReplyDeleteAlso imagine just waking up one day and not having a clue as to where you come from. I think preserving history also preserves the culture that we also use to help define us.
Global has been quite an interesting class! I never thought we would analyse how people think. But figuring that out actually helped me understand a certain case or situation better . We really looked in depth in many topics, another aspect i have enjoyed so far.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you say that there is benefits and risks about knowing past history.. I think that if someone really wanted to do terrible things they would think of things on their own and history wouldn´t really affect their mind.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, I think Global gives us a totally different way to view history they give us an outlook unlike standard history classes do. We really go into detail on why or how certain things can happen. I personally used to not appreciate history at all but I think it really depends on how you're learning it. I think it is actually really important to know because at the end of the day history always repeats. If it is taught in a negative way I think it can be easy for people to get the wrong idea like Cassie was saying and interpret it wrong. But if it is more of an informative "hey, this has happened and this is out there" it can be really helpful.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this post. Although I think it's super unlikely that an individual tries to attempt an atrocity that has happened in the past, I do think most of what we learn is irrelevant. Global has given us a new perspective on numerous historical events that we have previously learned about in other history classes such as the Holocaust. We took the time to research and learn about what would lead so many individuals to allow and support this genocide of millions of innocent people.
