Influence vs. Morals
As we watched Bigger, faster, stronger, I found it really interesting how what Chris looked up to as a child and what his morals were as a kid followed him all the way through his adulthood. Throughout his life he watched his heroes on the tv be such strong and inspiring people to him. However these people were insprining him while they were taking steroids, which is something he did not know at the time. As he grew older and discovered that people he looked up to his entire life were not truly the heroes he really thought they were, he was still able to stick to his morals and be against the use of steroids. After he found out about the steroid use of his heroes and his brothers he stated "I was always against steroids." However, despite this statement, Chris still tried steroids at one point in this life but said he felt too guilty to continue. Chris, growing up with such high morals and knowing the idea of steroids was wrong was able to stick to that as he grew older despite who he was surrounded by.

Hey Rachel. You are actually commenting on Bigger, Faster, Stronger* which we are watching in large group. That's totally fine. Just wanted to be sure you were clear about which documentary was which! Do you have any thoughts about why Chris is different from his brothers in the sense that they were all raised in the same household and yet have very different experiences (and ethics) with the use of steroids?

ReplyDeleteI think Chris had such a different experience with steroids because of three big reasons. First of all, in the video, his mother stated that she payed more attention and was a lot more careful with Chris because he was so short and small and wanted him to feel loved. I feel like Chris having such a stable relationship with his mom and having that feeling of love, it was harder for him to get used to a life of cheating that he was not used to seeing. Secondly, I believe that since he believed his heros were not on steroids for the majority of his childhood and teen years, I think that built up his mindset on the idea that it was bad and that he did not need steroids to be who he wanted to be. Lastly, I think seeing how his brothers went and struggled through the use of steroids that it affected the way he saw them and didn't really want to be like them in the long run.
