Is Affluenza occurring in our neighborhood? In class we watched a video where this rich boy decided to throw a party, drink alcohol, and then get behind the wheel of a car. He ended up getting in a multi-car crash killing six people. This boy ended up surviving the crash but due to affluenza he thought he could get away with it with no penalty. He ended up receiving probation and had to go to a rehabilitation center of his choice. He ended up picking the nicest one available but got kicked out because they decided it wasn't enough of a punishment. If any other people did something like this they would be sentences to a way harsher punishment but since his family is so rich they were able to cut him a break. In our neighborhood there are also a lot of rich people in which may be able to pay their trouble away.

  1. I think affluenza is a really serious matter. Growing up in a less privileged area I witnessed parents that weren't able to bail out their children because they didn't have the money stability to do that which resulted in law enforcement taking charge. Growing up in Half Moon Bay a very different place from Los Altos I still see the same similar crimes and mistakes occurring but handled very differently. In Half Moon Bay the law would be getting involved whether the kids were on probation and parol officers made monthly visits to the school or adolescents were spending time in juvi was always another alternative that was not uncommon. Now living in a very well to do area, I see kids getting themselves in similar situations but it isn't juvi they are being sent to, it is a very expensive camp or rehabilitation center either in Utah or sometimes even Hawaii. I'm not justifying these programs that they are not effective but I think it is a much better alternative than having something on your record or spending time in a juvenile detention center. So, yes I think affluenza is occurring everyday in these well to do areas that people don't even think anything of it. Money is granting these kids an easier way out of their struggles and to help better themselves.
