I stumbled upon an article that basically says that the media has lied about how many mass shootings actually occurred. Out of the 355 shootings that happened, the article stated that only 4 including the San Bernadino attack was a "mass shooting". According to the article, what qualifies as a mass shooting is when 4 or more people have been killed. But does that really matter? Mass shooting or not, there have been 355 cases where a gun was used in an inappropriate and violent manner that caused injuries or led to someone's death. The idea that there have only been 4 "mass shootings" this year alone does not stray away from the fact that there is something really wrong with the way people use guns, and the way our society reacts and handles the situation.
Totally agree with you Lauren. Just because a shooting resulted in the loss of four or less lives does not make the incident any less significant. I honestly think that the media is just trying to put this idea of denial into people's heads by trying to make light of a very serious situation.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand really what the goal of that article is. Okay, so now we know that there are officially only 4 mass shootings, but doesn't the rest of that 351 shootings matter, or scare anyone? It's not a mass shooting, but don't people realize how often these incidents are occurring, or do we need to label these tragedies as a "mass shooting" in order to get people's attention?
ReplyDeleteI agree because it's similar to the term ¨Serial Killers.¨ Someone only gets to be called a ¨Serial Killer¨ if someone kills three or more people. I dont think it matters how many people has to be killed in order for it to be a mass shooting or a person being called a serial killer. Innocent people are stil getting killed.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Lauren. The media today has a strong influence on what the world sees. A lot of the things talked about on the news is censored or filtered out. The fact that something as big as mass shootings gets filtered out shows you that there are probably a lot of other important things filtered out.
