College Athletes
After watching the video in class it opens us up to what really lies underneath college. We all have this grand idea of college is and forget what comes along with freedom, alcohol, frats, and sports. This video opened us up about how serious rape and sexual assault is on college campuses. The most shocking but also expected part was how the athletes were dealt with when they were the perpetrators of a sex crime. It seems as if colleges specifically the athletic programs are sheltering these college athletes and protecting them from the consequences any other kid would undergo. It's amazing how much power the athletic programs have. It's not uncommon for these boys to come out of awful situations with a clean record or slate. I am not saying that every college athlete is a rapist and a sexual predator but with all of the fame and popularity they get at such a young age it isn't difficult for the greatness to go to their heads. I personally know two college football players, they're brothers where one plays for Stanford and the other plays for Oregon and they're nothing like the negative stereotype.

I agree, I find it super interesting how much the school will fight for an athlete just in order to keep him or her on the team as well as keep the school from getting a bad reputation.
ReplyDeleteThe documentary was super eye opening for me as well. We hear about these incidents in the press occasionally but I would have never guessed that athletes are so involved with these incidents. Supposedly college athletes are responsible for 1/3 of sexual assaults. Knowing most of them get away with it is sickening.
