Auschwitz Trail

I was looking for articles based on Auschwitz and I came across this article about an Auschwitz trail. Reinhold Hanning, 94-year old former Nazi SS guard, has gone into trial in Germany for the death of at least 170,000 people. Its been said that Hanning met the Jewish prisoners when they arrived at the camps in Poland and may have escorted some to the gas chambers. Although he has admitted in being a guard there, he has denied that he was involved in the mass murder. Hanning is one of the four elderly former Nazi guards who are due to go on trial in the coming months.

It´s crazy to know that after 73 years of Hanning being a SS guard at the death camps, he is barely going to trial for all the deaths that happened at the Auschwitz. Although its been a very long time, at least there could be justice for the awful and disgusting experiences that many innocent Jewish had to go through.

  1. I think that it is strange that it took so long for this SS guards to go on trial. There will be justice for all the awful things that he committed but why did it take so long for there to be justice. He is 94 years old and it has been 73 years since he committed these crimes. Will he even serve time or get punished another way. I question it since he is a elder man what will really be is punishment. The most important thing is that there will be justice for the many lives that were lost.

  2. I am relieved to know that measures are still being taken to bring justice for all those who suffered. I just can not fathom the idea that some people are able to live with themselves after inflicting so much suffering on hundreds and thousands of innocent people. How can one just go about living their lives as if it never happened and have little to no affect on them? It's crazy.

  3. It is interesting that very recently they have four men going on trial, because like you said, it has been so long (I'm sure that these men have been living in hiding). It's thought provoking to think about if it was one of your grandparents, would you think that he deserved to go to prison? Or would you fight for his freedom so that he could live out his last few years at home with his family? I personally think that he should have been punished earlier in his lifetime, but there isn't much that they can do about it now.
