In the entire world there are only a few hundred thousand who survived the Holocaust and even fewer victims who survived Auschwitz. It scares me to think that after all the survivors pass away, how long would it be until we forget, or believe that it happened? 15 years after the Holocaust happened, survivors came out to talk about their experience and to testify what happened, there were people who still could not believe the Holocaust happened even when there was living breathing proof that it did. What will happen when there are no more survivors to tell their story. How will this story change when no one can no longer talk about their experience? In years to come will people still believe their stories? Books and stories get lost and forgotten all the time. We all know the name W.E. B. Du Bois, but how many of us go to the library on our own time to learn about him and his story? Most of us read The Diary of Anne Frank because we HAD to for school. How many of us would have actually read the book just because we wanted too?
Good point, Lauren. I think generations ahead need to continue being taught about the Holocaust and the horrible acts committed. If no one knows about it in the future, it could happen again. I remember in middle school we were given a brief description (not as much as this class of course) about what happened and Anne Frank in particular. I think students should go in depth into the beginning of Nazi's reign in Germany and be taught to understand how it began and ended the way we learned in this class. I think we all have a way better understanding as to how the little things that the Nazi's started doing to the Jews grew into the extermination camps and the mass murders that were committed.
ReplyDeleteThat is a scary thought to think that thousands of people's stories and accounts of the tradegic events that they endured. But I can only imagine that some countries that suffer from poverty and don't focus their educational curriculum on the Holocaust but rather on math and science. Not everyone has the resources that we are so lucky to have to be able to educate ourselves on these historic events.
ReplyDeleteI hope that stories such as Anne Franks and others won't be forgotten.
Its sad to think that eventually there will less and less acknowledgement about the Holocaust. I think as time goes on, more people will have less knowledge about the Holocaust. I believe thats something that just happens and there is really no way to avoid this, sadly, it becomes less important to some people as they know less information.. it becomes easier to be in denial that this crime happened.
