Mind the Gap
As we all prepare to explore our own paths in life after graduation, many of us have chosen to continue our education at college, the typical path many students choose to take. However, another option that has grown in popularity in recent times is to opt to take a gap year in between high school and college, heck even the president's daughter is taking a gap year before joining the Harvard class of 2021. A gap year provides real world experience and a sometimes well needed break from school to people who may not be sure if they want to continue their education at a university quite yet, or even want to experience something other than school, like a job or traveling/studying abroad, before returning to the routine life of school. More and more students have been opting to either participate in service trips/study-abroad-type trips during their gap year, providing them with exposure to other cultures and educational experiences outside of a classroom. I believe that, when used properly, the things that people experience during their gap year can be extremely beneficial to them in the long run whether they decide to return to school after their year or continue on to another path in life. What do you think about choosing to take a gap year after high school?

Woo gap years! I think if a student can use their gap year effectively to travel, learn and have fun I'm all for it. I do think that gap years can lead to students never returning to school. I know the formal universities aren't for everyone but I've definitely witnessed students taking a "gap year" that turns into a few more than one year. But overall I think gap years are super beneficial to most people, if you can take the opportunity to take a break why not!!?
ReplyDeleteGap years are not looked at enough and I'm not sure why. I know there's stigma around it, but I wish people viewed it as a valuable opportunity instead of just pushing it away. It can really help someone find them self.
ReplyDeletePersonally I feel like gap years aren't necessarily a health and viable option for high school seniors after senior year. I think people should go to college directly after otherwise it could make the student lazy and lose track of whats important. It's rare that someone in a gap year is working at a really good job so I just don't think it's worth while.
ReplyDeleteThe thing with Gap years is that they don't push you further in life as much as getting through education does. Sure, there are many benefits to ones personality and well being, but, it puts you a year behind everyone educationally. There are countries that start college at the age of 16. American's are already lagging behind in a mediocre educational system. It doesn't seem that great to put oneself even further back.
