Censorship
While watching the documentary "Miss Representation", the documentary suggested that crude video games, movies and TV shows promote violence and the objectivity of women. The belief is that this teaches people, especially children that this kind of behavior is acceptable. Most top selling video games contain some degree of violence. The documentary then went on to discuss censorship and how the government needs stricter regulations regarding violence in the media. It is absurd to think that hiding our society from this will lower rates of violence against women. Individuals that are seriously impacted and inspired from these forms of media are those who are already predators or aggressors. Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, violence against women and bullying. I do not believe that the violence in the media leads to social violence unless the viewer is mentally unstable and susceptible to this kind of negative influence.

I agree with you, Avery. We need to not focus on the excuse, but rather on the root cause of the issue at hand...the perpetrators own experiences and motives behind the crimes. The problem is, there will always be excuses in society, and they are hardly avoidable. Saying violence in the media is the root cause of aggression means anyone can blame their anger or violent urges on it. This is a classic example of where a supposed "cause" becomes the perpetrator's excuse.
ReplyDeleteI think that documentary was very biased which kinda ticked me off. I do think that blaming video games and other sources as the reason to why there is violence against women is absurd. I also don't think having the government regulating it would be a terrible idea because then I would feel like the government would be running our lives which really isn't okay.
