Fraternities being suspended

After watching the "The Hunting Ground", I started searching up about the fraternities and sororities in colleges. I came across these two articles about two schools who have suspended fraternities.

University of Wisconsin suspended the SAE after they found out that members of the fraternity repeatedly used racist and bigoted slurs to a black member who tired to stop it. Since of the suspension, they cannot participate in any Greek activities until November 1, and cannot recruit any new members this fall. Members have to undergo diversity and mental health training before the fraternity can be restore. It has also been on probation for unrelated incident of underage drinking.

Here's the video of the racist chant: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/la-na-university-oklahoma-racist-fraternity-sae-video-20150309-premiumvideo.html

Oregon State suspend fraternity AGR for 5 years for hazing and harassment. The OSU spokesman Steve Clark told the Corvallis-Gazette-Times that the incidents date back to at least 2012, involved alcohol consumption, inappropriate slapping and touching, and keeping prospective members in rooms bombarded with amplified music. The fraternity can apply for reinstatement in 2021 and will have a two-year probationary period. Even though AGR had a chance to appeal the suspension, a representative declined it.

  1. Great post. I think what is the most disturbing and unsettling thing about this is how both fraternity were suspended on several things, but not one of them were on sexual assault- even though it's one of the most commonly repeated crimes there. Although I'm glad that the both of the fraternity are suspended, I don't think it did anything to help the sexual assault issues. It continues to leave it in the silence.

  2. I'm personally not a huge fan of fraternities and sororities, I think it is a really stupid and immature concept. I think a lot of the things they promote and are known for are awful and disturbing. Obviously, they're a lot of pros that go along with them also but it is not uncommon for frats to be on probation or even kicked out of being recognized as part of the national community. The hazing and harassment that occurs in these groups are awful but these traditions have been occurring for ages but I think a line needs to be drawn somewhere or kids will end up dead.

  3. I agree with both comments, frats and sororities should be penalized more, and the whole concept of a frat and a sorority I find to be hopelessly idiotic. There needs to be greater bannings on hazings and harassment, otherwise we may never move forward as a society, especially for the youth that feel they have no voice.
