Sexual Assault on Campus
Ms. B shared with small group that a few days ago she was involved in an altercation between a girl on campus and her boyfriend. According to a friend, their relationship was difficult and the girl had been trying to end it for a long time. In this incident, sadly, there was supposedly a short amount of time where the boyfriend had had hands on the girl, causing the friend to get Ms. B's attention. I think it's so ironic that the day that happened here on our campus, we started watching the Hunting Ground, and how it happens on campus' all over the United States. The difference between here and the universities is that something actually happened here. Being a TA during 5th period, I watched as Ms. Woolfolk filed the incident statements and me and Nano wrote the 2 individuals notes to go back to class. They both got to speak with administrators separately so there was no pressure to lie. In universities, where people are living and should be able to feel safe spending 24 hours on campus, they brush the sexual assault aside, even when it's worse than grabbing someone to get their attention. Several universities brush aside rape and instead of doing something about it and getting the perpetrator in trouble (or what I would like to see: expelled), they allow the victim to leave campus because they feel unsafe. I think this is so stupid and that something needs to happen, I just cant come to an idea on how. Any ideas?

I think like the college campus, the school administrators are being really careful. They don't know what the two relationship is like, so they're more hesitant to make any big decision. But I think they should make the two go to counseling to make sure there's not anything bad going on. I think our school should have done more
ReplyDeleteThere is a big difference between the high school and college setting. There is more of a sense of confrontation or being up front when something does occur such as sexual harassment or rape in a highschool. Meanwhile, at a college especially the larger ones there is a lot more people you have to go through to get that upfront conversation which can be very difficult when a situation has occurred.
ReplyDeleteI think for universities, they should stop being babies and acknowledge the fact that sexual assualt/harrassment happens literally anywhere and that it happens on their campus. I think if they do that, they could open the doors for victims to come forward with their stories and get their perpetrators out of the school. Even though some people might hesitate to apply or decide to go to a school if it was labeled as a campus with sexual assault, I think the reward is greater than the risk in this case.
