I watched a 60 minutes segment on America's vs Germany's prison system and I was blown away. After watching it I wish I would of done my documentary on the subject because it is a very interesting an controversial topic. I was blown away when it said America spends 80 billion dollars a year on its prison system. The main question that continues to be asked about prison is if prison is for punishment or rehabilitation. In Germany the prisoners have their own room, with doors for privacy to themselves. The room is similar to a college dorm room with a desk, bed, closet and bathroom. The prisoners wear everyday clothing, not the jumpsuits we see on TV and cartoons. The prisoners actually have a key to their own room and can move in and out around the jail as they please. Also in Germany, when an inmate builds up good behavior they are allowed weekend visits. There was a segment where a convicted murder left the jail and got ice cream with his family, then returned to his room with a key after his visit. The German prisoners also had jobs they worked during the day and would leave the prison for work then return after work. I feel like this may raise a lot of questions, but there seemed to be a lot less problems than American jails. I feel prison has to be punishment for some people, but for the majority prison should be about rehabilitation and preparing people for a second chance at making society better as a whole. Is jail suppose to be punishment or rehabilitation?
